From XFM -

In a music industry first, today The Charlatans have become the first band
to release their album for free in association with a radio station,
namely, Xfm.

Which means that by clicking the link below you're just minutes away from
owning the brand spanking new Charlatans album 'You Cross My Path'
featuring the quality singles 'Oh Vanity' and title track 'You Cross My
Path'.

Download now!

Charlatans lead singer Tim Burgess explains, "We want 'the people' to own
the music and we want the artist, i.e. us, to own the copyright."

"Why let a record company get in the way of people getting the music?"

I shall be downloading it - not because I'm a Charlatans fan; I do like them, but I've never bought an album of theirs, I've seen them live but only becasue they were supporting someone else.

I shall be downloading it because I want to send an important message to the Music Industry - that this is the way I want my music.

So even if you're not a Charlatans fan, go check out the album. At worst, you won't like it much, you'll have spent nothing but will have still sent a message about music downloads. At best, not only will you be making a point, you might discover that you love the Charlatans, something you'd never have known if the CD was in the shops for £10.

There are few truly excellent cover versions. They're probably rarer than really good sequels.

But here are a few that I think are bordering on genius, and possibly actually better than the originals.

Elvis Costello covering Christina Aguilera's 'Beautiful'

Snake River Conspiracy covering The Cure's 'Lovesong'¹

Queen Adreena covering Dolly Parton's 'Jolene'

The Futureheads covering Kate Bush's 'Hounds of Love'

Apologies for the you tube links, but I can't give you links to MP3s for the following reasons:

a - I don't know how

b - I only own the last one linked to there

c - that's technically illegal, right?

If anyone can rectify this by sending me directions on how to legally obtain MP3s of the first 3, that'd be awesome. I've only ever heard 2 and 3 in clubs, and I only heard the Elvis Costello one about 5 minutes ago for the first time.

Do you have any favorite cover versions?² Or any contenders for the *worst* cover of all time?

[1] - SRC's cover of how soon is now is also pretty awesome
[2] - and can you link to somewhere I could listen to it?.

So, many many months ago i all told you to go to this myspace page and listen to a track called Thou Shalt Always Kill. Then it got famous. See how you can trust me when it comes to music?

Anyway, their new track is out September 10th, have a listen - it's brilliant. Possible not as clever lyrically as Thou Shalt Always Kill, but probably far more catchy.

They're playing September 25th at the Scala, tickets are only £7, a bargain for an act that's surely going to be HYOOGE.

Who wants to come with me? I have a feeling tickets are going to sell out, as these guys may well be MASSIVE once The Beat That My Heart Skipped comes out.

And yes, the resemblance between Scroobius Pip himself and our own [livejournal.com profile] crazymeandave is beyond uncanny.

Suzerain

Suzerain are one of the BEST BANDS IN THE WORLD. Well, they're pretty good. I've been going about them forever, I know, but trust me, they're excellent.

The won best new alternative act at the Indy awards, and now their brand new EP is available to download...

go to their myspace page to you can also buy the tracks for a super bargainous 99p each, or pre-order the CD for four of your earth pounds.

or, LISTEN FOR FREE at the XFM website. If these three songs get enough listens, they'll make it onto Music Response, and then fame is assured! So you can say you heard them first...before they were famous...

And trust me on this, I told you all how marvellous Lily Allen was before she exploded into the world, I went on about Air Traffic while they were still playing The Water Rats for £5 entry, and they're all over radio one. Parka and Suzerain are my top tips, trust me, I'm a used care salesman a pirate!

I had a beautiful moment of musical synchronicity this morning.

You know when the music you are listening to seems to match what you're doing? Maybe you are waiting to meet someone, and all the strangers around you seem to be moving in time to the song; maybe the rain starts to fall just as a particularly sad song starts to play. Maybe the sort of moment when you feel as if you're in the film or music video of your own life. Maybe you have no idea what I'm talking about!

I love moments of musical synchronicity. This morning, as I was nearly at work, the Delays' 'Valentine' (a beautiful song, although I'm not sure many of you know the Delays) was reaching its musical climax, a beautiful harmony of guitars and synths and emotional vocals, the refrain "tell me the truth it makes you feel better" swirling round as the music makes you feel like you've got the wind in your hair and the world all around you, just for you. This moment arrived exactly as I turned onto York Way, the big hill leading down to work, and I sped down the hill in time to music surely made for speeding down hills, jumping out of planes, leaping before you look and feeling the wind in your hair and the world being all around you and yet fading away until there's only you and the music and the feeling of being alive.

Musical Synchronicity. It makes me happy :)

Do you ever feel the musical synchronicity?

Eminem vs Benny Hill

I first heard this years ago, and recalled its existence the other day when [livejournal.com profile] iamthe_sky linked to this.

Both songs are absolute genius. I can't find them on the net as MP3s, which is a shame, as i hae decided mash-ups are the new black, and i want as many as i can find.

You got any good ones?

In other news, I've been drunk for over 24 hours. whoops. I'm either still drunk now and yet surprisingly lucid, or I've miraculously avoided a hangover.
