torchwood

is SO BAD.

why am watching it?

the acting is bad enough, but the programme makers seem to need to put this incidental music over everything.

there's THIS MOMENT IS SAD music, THIS MOMENT IS SPOOKY music, THIS MOMENT IS FUNNY music. And every now and then the camera goes all swingy for no reason to back up the THIS MOMENT IS SPOOKY music, as if to hammer the point home.

Still, having caught part of robin hood the other day, torchwood isn't as bad as that... half of them look like they bought their clothes in primark. And you keep expecting Robin Hood to go 'alwight mate, don't leave yer car there, i'll nick it, innit. i'm a geeza, yeah?'

It's written by Russell Twee, what do you expect? *grin*

I know how bad it is, but I still like it.

Faeries!

Am I a bad person for liking both?

The only time there is a good music score in a program or film is when you dont notice its there.

[identity profile] angel-emma.livejournal.com 2006-11-12 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok this one tonight really was DIRE. I keep giving it a chance and it lets me down every week. If this had been a Dr Who episode, I would have been all "awwww the little girl is going to go off with them" etc but I couln't give a shit. In fact the only thing I gave a shit about was shirtless Jack at the beginning. It all went downhill from there!!!

URGH why is it bad? I wish it was good :):(:(

There was an advert for robin Hood on tv the other night and the music for the advert was Alice by the Sisters of Mercy; I was quite impressed, sorry to hear that the program is shit.

[identity profile] deviblue.livejournal.com 2006-11-12 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The swingy camera thing is to make it look like the 'steadycam fisheyelens' thing that they did in evil dead, but they're on a budget.

I think the fact its being shown on BBC 3 is more than enough to tell you what it was going to be like. Its just not Doctor Who (although I am dreading the christmas episode)

As for Robin Hood, just cos it claims to be robin hood, it doesn't make it Robin hood

[identity profile] robtrooper.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
I do see a pattern in your Torchwood posts.
You always ask why you are watching it but still watch it the next week.
I remember the old doctor who was crappy sets, funny sounds and questionable acting but that was the show and i still watched it without really knowing why.
But you've totaly put me off robin hood now.

[identity profile] emmelinemay.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think the best score ever is The Princes Bride. The score works perfectly with every action and gesture, and manages to add to the film without being distracting. genius :)

In Torchwood you feel like the actors are fighting an uphill stuggle with the score.

I wish it was good too. The character of Jack is all wrong - he's not meant to be this dark brooding drying thing - he's larger than life and camp and funny and tough with a mysterious past. Bollocks to all this crying lark.

And that girl is just TERRIBLE. Her voice, facial expressions and body posture NEVER match eacher other, and she is a totally unbeleiveable character. As much as i love Mr Barrowman, he's not a strong enough actor/character to carry the weight of the other 3 who are weak at best.

None of the incidental cast are ever strong enough for you to care. The stepdad was HORRIBLE but you felt sorry for him because the little girl was totally vile. I'm not sure what that mum's wiggling was all about - you're meant to be all sad for her because she's just lost her boyfriend and her daughter in one go, but she looked so funny wobbling away you couldn't feel sad.

And there weren't really plot holes so much as GAPING PLOT CANYONS.

Jack was HOW old in 1909? So HOW old when he met that lady? How old was she meant to be exactly? How long has he been 'immortal'? He was responsible for those men but the 'fairies' spared him? why? and how did he know they ran over a chosen one?

Arrgh.

It goes on.

I think i keep watching it hoping and hoping for it to get good, and it never does. I can't help thinking how good it would be if it was written by someone else, like wotsisname who wrote Firefly and Buffy.

And UGH that incidentaly music drives me mad. It's like trying to watch a TV show in a lift with the tinny twee music in the background ALL THE TIME.

We only caught the last 10 minutes, but it was hilarious. Robin walks with this hoddie-chav-style swagger, and talks with this 'alrite mate yeah i'm a geeza innit' voice.

[identity profile] emmelinemay.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't watch it last week, i only really put it on this week as i was tired, but not sleepy enough to go to bed, and was bored. I though it would pass the time.

It's probably telling that mid-programme i came down to make this post... So i missed the middle bit. I have no idea why the 'fairies' killed the old lady, and i actually don't care.

I just hope i don't get bored enough to watch it again.

Robin hood is more like the old Dr Whos - it's bad enough to be funny!

[identity profile] aeia.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
"he's larger than life and camp and funny and tough with a mysterious past."

Isnt that the other Captain Jack? :)

[identity profile] emmelinemay.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
heh :)

I just preferred the Captain Jack in Dr Who. This one seems to want to be Batman.

[identity profile] emmelinemay.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
by that i mean he wants to be batman, rather than batman..

[identity profile] emmelinemay.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
hahah :D

[identity profile] angel-emma.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH.

It's even worse in the cold light of day :(

Yup if Joss Whedon had written it, it would be perfect. Oh hang on he already did. It was called Angel :/

[identity profile] emmelinemay.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
hehe :)

[identity profile] angel-emma.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
The "fairies" killed the old lady (apparantly raining can drown you) because she took pictures of them. *sighs*

[identity profile] miss-soap.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
The first two weren't bad. The most recent two have just been laughably dire. I will probably keep watching it, though.

[identity profile] greeba.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
But Doctor Who is good, Russell the T only wrote one of the four shit Torchwood episodes that I've watched (didn't even bother with last night's...) and he did write The Second Coming, which was fucking ace! I can't fathom why it's turned out so bad, but I agree with Emmie. Having defended Doctor Who to people all my life I find with Torchwood that I don't know where to start.

[identity profile] greeba.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I too am dreading the christmas episode... The tearful coda of the last series was ruined by the untimely appearance of Catherine Sodding Tate.

[identity profile] cookwitch.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah well. I like it. Even the Russell T episodes. each to their own. :)

[identity profile] rubberwench.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
robin hoodie!

[identity profile] rubberwench.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
what really annoys me about robin hood is that all the peasentary have got working class accents, but they're from all over the country. that's really dumb - they're in nottinghamshire ffs. they live in villages where they've lived their whole lives, they're unlikely to sound like they're from yorkshire and certainly not like they're from london. and if they can't get enough actors to do a nottinghamshire accent, they should at least TRY and get everyone sounding the same.
what was robin doing talking all geezer? i'm sure when i saw it he was fairly rp.
