Following a discussion about public information films over at [livejournal.com profile] 2wheelsbetter I went looking on you tube.

I remember this one!

There's loads more classic 70s and 80s Public information Films on you tube - including some classic Charley. Apparently, Kenny Everett provided the voice for Charley!

Which ones do you remember?

I remember 2 I can't find on you tube - one about kids playing with a frisbee near a power station, and another about flying a kite near power lines. I don't remember the grim reaper one about drowning in a quarry, but DAMN I want to see it!

edit - thank you [livejournal.com profile] yaruar! Dark and lonely water...

'Sensible children - I have no power over them'

AWESOME.

there are two volumes of dvd's of those old public information films that you can buy - I think they're called Charley Says, actually.

Brilliant viewing!

you can find 'Frisbee' here (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/films/1964to1979/filmindex2.htm) if you scroll along a few pages!

I want to know if anyone has 'cheggars plays safe', or 'accident on park road', or the one where robbie the young footballer gets his feet lopped off by a train. man these things used to scare me!

what an AWESOME website!! Thank you!

I found the frisbee one. And was totally unable to watch it, as just seeing the picture of that frisbee brought it all back! I used to have to run out of the room when that one was on, it upset me so much!!

being a country kid, i had to deal with these ones:

Robbie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_%28Public_Information_Film%29)

Apaches (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apaches_%28Public_Information_Film%29)

man, Apaches is HARDCORE.

that said, The Finishing Line (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Finishing_Line) sounds like it would have given me a heart attack! yikes!

Wikepedia is ace for finding this stuff!

wow, i don't remember any of those. I grew up in the country too, but we had no railways so i guess that explains that one. Surprised i never saw the farm one though. Or maybe i did, but have blocked it out due to psychological damage...

I have a DVD of public information films spanning the 50s-80s (I think there's about 60-70 on there) and it has the pylon one and the frisbee one (interesting factoid: did you know that it was philosopher Daniel Dennett that introduced the frisbee to the UK?) The only problem is, I've lent it out to someone, and don't remember to whom...

It even has the Shaw "are you a clunk-clicker?" Taylor seatbelt ads, although when he says it, it sounds rather different (and far, far ruder)... ;-)

I should find it, and take it to the Monkey and show it in the cinema room. Booze and public information films: a winning combo!
