calling all girls and creative people

i need to somehow construct a bra i can wear with backless stuff.

the 'backless' straps i bought are only good for very low backed things, as they still have visible straps which look a bit *ick* with real backless clothing. you can see from my icon how low the tattoo is - my usual bra strap falls just over where the long part down my spine has two upward spikes.

i've tried - believe me - braless is *not* an option.

the suction cup thingies look evil, and don't exist in a 30D.

i have some old bras i can cut up for experiment purposes.

one thought - cut all straps off bra - put two corset grommet things in each side, and one at the top of each cup. thread some type of strong black lacing type material through the holes, and tie the bra to me. This way, the lacing should look like the lacing on the backless top, right? or it should at least provide support without looking really trashy.

Would it work though? And does anyone know how to put those grommet things in in the first place?

Any other suggestions? (yes i have tried tape, and no it didn't work, and yes it did hurt when i took it off)

Two words: Duct tape. It will someday save the world.

I was going to say electrical, i love it. used properly it works wonders...

Oh.

...

Um.....

Safety pins. And more duct tape. ::runs away to be annoying::

it was one of the first things i tried! i tried bondage tape too (less sticky) but it just doesn't do much other than squish me, which isn't really what i was going for...

What sort of backless stuff do you want to wear? If it is backless and strapless you'll be wanting a very low bodice with cups to hold you in place- that scoops down low Jessica Rabbit style or if you have straps or a halterneck you can move the bra-straps to hide under them.

actually backless. hence the 'backless' straps i bought are only good for very low backed things, as they still have visible straps which look a bit *ick* with real backless clothing.!

i need to make a bra that you can't see *any* bra strp looking things round the back, or the side.

I have a backless bra, its got normal shoulder straps then insread of fastening across the back the strap is long goes down low and crosses over lower down your back, then fastens around the waist..

i *have* those, they are no good for actual backless clothes, only low back stuff.

Maybe you should cast the bottom of your tits in plaster of paris (or better still, vacuum-formed plastic) and wear it down the front? support from the waist up rather than the shoulders down :)

[identity profile] emmelinemay.livejournal.com 2003-01-05 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
that sounds rather complex, and somewhat uncomfortable ;)

Well the grommet thingies are easy; you can get a gadget in places like J.Lewis's- I have one.
However this will only allow you, so far as I can work out, to have straps that don't look like straps, not a clear back to display tattoo unencumbered.
I too can only suggest the utterly impractical, such as a moulding for your front made of the advanced plastic stuff they made me a support from after my back op. Sorry. {need wry lip-shrug icon/symbol!}

the backless tops i have have ties, thin spaghetti strap sort of things, so if i had a bra with delecate little ties, that would certainly do the trick.

i have see through bra strap thingies, but you can still see them, and they look just like see through plasticy straps. not terribly elegant.

a trip to john lewis may have to be made then... thanks!

the lacing idea should work - you just do have to have a certain amount of visiable something at certain points as an enjineering thing and the lacing would look less underweary. If you cound find a bodice / girdle type thing to do similar with you might be able to do without the 'top of cup' gromits?

Could you modify the sticky-cup things with a gromit and halterneck lace to make them work?

Could you take the cups and wires of a push up style bra and run ribbons from the back of each wire, under your arms to your neck and loop around each other there for more 'upness' and then more ribons from the middle front of the wires around your waist?

[identity profile] emmelinemay.livejournal.com 2003-01-05 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
i really *really* didn't like the sticky cup things. the felt wierd. and they felt like they'd get super-sweaty after a bit of dancing.

the ribbons idea sounds good.. i think i shall need your help!!

seeing as weneed to get together to find nubers for preacher, shall we work out aday, and i bring over some material and a few old bras and we can experiment?

[identity profile] abishag.livejournal.com 2003-01-06 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
You [plural] are welcome to borrow my gadget for these experiments.
The tool-less grommets sound brilliant, but if you should have a problem...

[identity profile] yaruar.livejournal.com 2003-01-05 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
what about something which goes round the armpit/shoulder and attaches to skirt/trousers with straps and clips?
bra!
bra!
The advantage is that it looks like a gun holster from behind ;-)

i love those pictures. i LOVE them. i may steal them to make new icons.

i don't know how much support that would give though, um, ahem, uplift wise!

A quick google search http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/berlei-answers-smooth-backless-bra.asp might work if you wore it in halter neck style.

Or http://www.feelpretty.com/exstrapbacbr.html but cant see that on a UK site

[identity profile] emmelinemay.livejournal.com 2003-01-05 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
for the first one - i have the straps that will make any bra do that. you can get the for a fiver from La Senza! i have clear ones as well. problem is, with a real backless top, you can still see the straps, and it looks baaad. The are great for low back tops though.

the second looks more likely - and in a D cup too! not much uplift likely, but definitley better that nothing! i'll look into that one.

My idea was basically to cut bits of a bra til it looked like the secnd picture, then tie it on with spagetti straps, seeing as most of the backless tops i have tie with spagetti straps.

Two suggestions:

Cut the back off an underwire halter-neck bra, and tape around the bottom and sides (just under your arm). Yes, the tape will hurt when peeled off, but nowhere near as much as on your breasts. This is more of a special-occasion method than a regular-use one.

You can also buy individual bra cups at a sewing/fabric store (intended for use in swimsuits, and they are available in D cups) that are slightly padded and would offer some uplift -- you could sew those *into* the offending garment itself, thus making into a garment-with-bra.

And I think that your grommet/lacing suggestion would work too!!

-- Andi, eagerly awaiting your results, because I have the exact same problem!!

Victoria's Secret has one here: http://www2.victoriassecret.com/commerce/application/prodDisplay/?namespace=productDisplay&origin=onlineProductDisplay.jsp&event=display&prnbr=4H-151544&rfnbr=49&cgnbr=OSBRPSTPZZZ&page=1&cgname=OSBRPSTPZZZ
(I was just in the store today) However, it isn't much of a push-up type bra.

I think, if you took a bra, cut off all straps, and the band which goes around the back (but only part-way like the one above), then put grommets on the top of each cup and one at the top and bottom of the back (well, now side) band on either side. I'd use clear lacing to tie them through, and then pull them tight, and secure them. The top holes on either cup should probably be fixed halter-style.

By the way: you can actually just buy grommets which you can push through a small hole in fabric, rather than having to buy the whole machine to set them in - I think I still have some I could send you. Let me know.

[identity profile] emmelinemay.livejournal.com 2003-01-06 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
that's odd - the bra comes in size A-D cup, but the replacement adhesive only available in sie A-C... how bizarre.

your description is pretty much what i thought i'd try, only explained better!! grommets would be *most* useful :) fankoo!

Back again.... following on from the swimsuit cups straight into backless top idea- you could try just attaching the front part of a bra to the sides of the top where the laces depart from, so one set of laces holds both.
I had success with something similar- my problem being that I needed proper bra type support under a swimming costume for aquarobics.
