emmelinemayTorchwood is still awful.
Entertaining, maybe, but partly because of the endless opportunity for MST3K style commentary from the viewers.
First of all, Gwen still can't act. It's painful watching her try to act. Watching John Barrowman try to act, however, is HILARIOUS. Especially when he does the coming-back-to-life scream thing. Mark and I always go AAAARHHUUUUUURGGHHHH along with him every time it happens. I think Gwen's gappy tooth has actually got BIGGER as well.
Just a few of the problems I have with the show:
* Worst 'secret' organisation ever. They tell anyone they speak to who they are, everyone has heard of them, the government is hacking their computers.
* Gwen can shoot out all of the tyres in a moving car in the dark (despite having earlier proved she apparently has NO IDEA how to hold a gun) and yet the shady government organisation trying to take them out have chosen the WORST MARKSMAN EVER, who can't shoot a stationary target in daylight with a laser targeting weapon.
* Shady government organisation's number plate can be tracked by a bloke with a laptop? Clever.
* If you're going to steal a forklift to break your boyfriend out of a concrete block (I was going 'Hans! no!') why bother wasting time by also putting on the hi-vis and the hard hat?
* Hi, I am here to help with the computer system. Oh, you are going to make me walk around with you and visit secret buildings sites on the top floor of the MI5 building and take secret phone calls in front of me and give me your password even though you don't want me to know anything? ok.
* Hi, I am a PA who uses my manager's password out of curiosity. I'm a GREAT PA.
* "I didn't sign the official secrets act to cover up murder" = no comment.
In a weird way the nitpicking makes the show more fun. It really is horribly written in places, and the acting occasionally makes me want to crawl out of my own skin and hide in a corner.
Children stopping and screaming and talking in once voice though - brilliantly creepy. Like Village of the Damned en masse.
Of course I am going to watch for the rest of the week. I want to find out how they shoehorn in the new characters - I was genuinely surprised at the Dr's double cross, I thought he was a shoe-in for new Dr Character. Perhaps too good looking, in retrospect, and not annoying enough to join Torchwood.
I do love their recruitment strategy. "You did this one thing quite well! You're not bad looking! Want to join a secret organisation?". Miss Official-Secrets-Act will fit in perfectly.
I also want to find out whether the identity of the mysterious 'We' with the ability to control children (an amazing ability, parents over the world can't do it) is an astonishing revelation, or deeply dissapointing and clichéd a la that series that ended with Captain Jack vs the devil.
And, of course, 3 more episodes means 3 more opprotunities to nitpick, cheer at the gay kisses, and go AAAARHHUUUUUURGGHHHH as much as possible.
