American TV Schedules

Ok, what IS it with these weird US TV Schedules and taking random long breaks mid-series??

In the UK, you have one series, you show it consecutively. Unless there's cricket or football or something, when it gets shoved around a bit, but generally they show the whole series.

So what is is with this?

There was a massive break after episode 11, then they show 7 more, then what? no more for 6 weeks? And to leave it the way they did?? AARRAARARARRGGGGGGG!!!!

Are US tv schedulers briefed to kill every show they commission??

US people. Explain please.
