emmelinemay: (Mr Creazil was fun for a while)
So I went to the XFM X-posure night all the way down in Wimbledon. It's not really that bad a journey actually - the venue is less than 5 minutes walk from Wimbledon South Station on the Northern Line, which is about 35/40mmins direct from Angel, so not bad at all really.

Suzerain

Suzerain were, as always, AWESOME. Every time I see them they've beefed up their set in some way - they seem to get bored of the older songs and so just go HEY, let's re-arrange it, and it always sounds even better than before. The new version of 'Get By' was pared down to just Tom (the singer) on guitar (he sings, he's pretty, he gives great tailcoat-and-silk-scarf, he looks great in eyeliner AND he plays guitar. Why isn't he famous yet?) and the keyboardist on an electric cello for the first verse and chorus - beautifully simplistic and minimalist - before the rest of the band come crashing in for the second verse, creating a soaring indie-rock-pop EPIC of a tune. If you haven't had a chance to see them live yet, I would recommend it.

Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip

I have been going on about these guys for AGES. I told you all to go listen to Thou Shalt Always Kill back at the beginning of the year. Scroobius Pip is a vocalist, spoken word urban warrior poetry type, Dan Le Sac a hip hop dj mixer type.

It's pretty simple really - Scroobius Pip delivers witty, political, cynical, clever and often moving words at a cracking pace while Dan Le Sac chucks some beats over the top. It's like a spoken word gig with a soundtrack, basically. At one point DlS's equipment (an IBook and a mixing desk propped on a bar stool) broke down, and SP said, 'Oh fuck. We've got an issue. Mind of I do a quick spoken word while we fix it?' and rattled out a brilliant poem about speaking to the world leaders and how to fix the planet and solve global warming, which ultimately fails because all the average man wants to do is complain about the weather.

If you are interested in spoken word at all, or if you like political comedians like Mark Thomas or Rob Newman, you'd probably enjoy Scroobius Pip. They're not so hip-hop that they'd put anyone not into hip-hop off - they're not really hip-hop enough to be accepted by the hip-hop crowd (they do a whole song about hating hip hop...)

The most surprising thing about Scroobius Pip is - he's TALL. Really really tall. I don't know why I had it in my head that he wouldn't be, but he really is TALL. I went up and spoke to him¹ after the gig and as well as being TALL he's a thoroughly nice chap.

[1] Actually - the nerves and shyness took over and I spoke AT him - speaking at about 783927 miles an hour while he nodded and smiled politely.
