I have a real fascination for lost places and partial buildings. For example, as you come in to Liverpool Street Station from Stoke Newington way, on the left hand side are these random stones that look like parts of some old and long gone building, or perhaps tiny monuments to something - I can never quite get a good enough look at them to see what they are and "stone things outside liverpool street station" doesn't have much luck on Google.

I still haven't yet made it out to Crystal Palace to see the ersatz dinosaurs originally built for the great exhibition. Reading that they've been restored and cleaned up and reclaimed seems to ruin some of the mystery in a way. I used to love reading about the 'dinosaurs' that had been forgotten, and had become lost in the undergrowth; particularly the one who stared forlornly out of a long closed playground. Reclaiming and restoring them may be a wonderful project, but it has made them lose their 'lost and forgotten' quality which made them so magical to me.

I had thought up until today that the all time best of 'lost places' are abandoned tube stations/tunnels - but they may now have to share the top spot with my new obsession - abandoned theme parks. Who knew such things existed? as a comparitivley recent invention, you'd think there were no abandoned theme parks; rusting rollercoasters becoming home to wildlife and happy little houses taking on a strange and sinister aspect as they crumble away, forgotten.

So what brought this on? Reading one of my housemate's books in our Loobrary called 'crap towns' there was a feature on Morecambe which mentioned a short lived theme park based around 'Mr Blobby'. How misguided!? I just had to try and find pictures. I had imagined maybe a desolate concrete wasteground painted a peeling pink and yellow - but the pictures I found are so much better: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37632804@N04/sets/72157617141364080/

These aren't the picture from Morecambe, that is apparently long gone, these are pictures from the OTHER theme park in Cricket St Thomas. It's a little alarming to think that Mr Blobby was so popular, albeit briefly, as to have TWO theme parks. Even Michael Jasckson only had the one.

If I ever had the spare money and time, I would do a world tour of abandoned and forgotten underground tunnels and theme parks.

Do you know of any more lost places like this? Photos please!
