THAT'S 100 YARDS FROM OUR HOUSE

A row of houses above the site of the Channel Tunnel rail link are feared to be in danger of collapse after a huge hole opened up behind them.
Ten families totalling 47 people have already been moved from their homes in Stratford, east London, because of the danger.

The back gardens of three houses in the street earlier disappeared into the hole, with the buildings left teetering on the brink.

The hole was about 40 metres by 70 metres wide, and 10 metres deep, according to firefighters.

We are fairly certain that our tunnel boring machine ultimately caused this hole to open up in the ground

Rail link spokesman

A spokeswoman for Newham Council said on Saturday: "We think the whole row of houses could collapse."

The hole was caused by a landslip, which the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project said had probably been caused by underground tunnelling.

The families, who included elderly people and babies, were taken to hotels overnight.

Hole inspection

They were hoping to find out on Sunday if they could return to their homes, following an inspection by a structural engineer.

Overnight the hole was filled with concrete to stabilise the ground and prevent any further damage.

A spokesman for the project apologised to residents.

In the longer term, we may have to look at rehousing in private properties

Newham Council

He said a giant boring machine had been excavating an eight-metre wide tunnel 20 metres below the surface of the gardens, a day and a half before the landslip.

"We are fairly certain that our tunnel boring machine ultimately caused this hole to open up in the ground. Its progress obviously, at some stage, caused this hole to appear.

"We won't be moving our boring machine again until we are satisfied that we know how it happened and that it won't happen again."

Return home

He said he hoped most residents would be able to return to their homes on Sunday.

Residents are hoping they can soon return home
"We very much hope that we will have the residents back in their homes as soon as possible, but the key issue is safety."

"If there is any risk there is no way they are going to be allowed to go back," said the council spokeswoman.

"In the longer term, we may have to look at rehousing in private properties but it is too early to say."

The Channel Tunnel project will link Ashford, Kent, with a new terminal at St Pancras in London.

The section currently being built is part of over 20km of tunnels being dug under London and the Thames for the project, scheduled to open in 2007.

Pog told me when i called last night that the road was closed, so we got a taxi back from the charity auction (where i uttterly failed to win paintball for pog, but a work colleague won free passes for 6 to walthamstow dog track, so we're all off to that!) and i had to give him directions to go round maryland, although i didn't know what was wrong...

feck.

that would certainly be interesting.

Straford dissapears into big hole. That would definitely improve the area.
