Your pret-a-porter stuff (have a look at the asos website, each item on there has its own 'view catwalk' option), half the time, needs 'real' bodies in it to show it off. The models are often in the closest size available for them (an 8 or 10) which is usually too big for them, and too short to boot. These are clothes that have been designed to be worn by us lot.
The high fashion and showcase shows usually bear more resemblance to a performance than a showcase for CLOTHES, the models are basically walking 3D canvases and in these cases the clothes are samples made in a size 4-6 designed specifically for a certain shape and height.
I think the fact that sometimes they look AWFUL is more to do with the dreadful clothes than the shape of the person in them...
