If you haven't already heard about this - Blair and Bush have been nominated for the nobel peace prize for the war in Iraq.

You can sign a petition against it here.

I for one am utterly utterly horrified.

And?
Hitler was nominated once.
Apart from Mother Teresa I'm hard pressed to think of anyone who's won the prize that isn't responsable for peoples deaths.
The oscars have nothing on the sham that is the nobel peace prize.

I'm dubious on the mother-teresa-not-responsible-for-deaths front.
The Iraq war was technically illegal, under international law, and was done for western political & economic (ie oil)expediency, rather than for the supposedly moral reasons claimed by Blair & Bush, which surely should disbarr them from nomination?

LAws are mute unless enforced.
No-one has been charged with anything, much less convicted, and until then they are leagally innocent.
It's fine for you and me to say they're guilty but if the UN does all hell breaks loose.
Not that that is a bad thing but it'll never happen.
Winners write the hitory books.
There are numurous accounts of attrocities carried out by english soldiers in WWII but ever hear war crimes menioned?Or by any winning side?
When it comes to politics the end has always justified the means.

Many people have already made the point, a nomination is not the same as the award. If they get the award, this will be a completely different question.

If they get the award, it says more about the judging proce$$ than it does about the victors.

but i rather feel that the act of nominiation may make it seem as if their actions are justified and supported; when there were mass demonstraions against it. Like what xanta says above, their motives were suspect...

A monination for an award is as much a recognition as the winner. To continue the oscars theme, films can just as rightfully trumpet their supposed quality by announcing how many awards they were nominated for, if not actually won...

Personally I blame the Norwegian politician who nominated them.
