Phrases which, however 'nicely' said will pretty much always engender rage, frustration or cycnisim in me #1

No disrespect.

Is it me, or does this actually mean 'with the HUGEST amount of disrespect, and not a fair amount of loathing...'

DO you have any phrases which will always tick your 'well, fuck YOU' box?

Hmm.

"I don't mean to be racist/sexist/any other Ist but..." usually prefaces something so extremely Ist that it makes your eyes come out on stalks.

'i'm not being racist BUT i'm about to say something which i think is probably racist, thus negating my reason for saying the first 5 words of this sentence.'

Exactly. Or the "I don't mean to be rude but..." usually means "I am about to be screamingly rude and poke my nose in where it really doesn't belong but don't mind me eh, it's just my little way."

Then if you get upset they tell you that you're too sensitive.

Not a phrase, more just words, but people that call me 'love', 'darling' or 'sweetheart', when they don't know me (and often if they do).

If you know me, you know I most certainly am not a darling!!

'Promise you won't get upset?'

How can one promise a future reaction when you've NO idea what the person is about to say, and - BECAUSE they've prefaced it with this - are pretty sure you're going to be upset about it, whatever it is.

From: [identity profile] emmelinemay.livejournal.com
and then if you say 'yes', but then you do get upset, then you break a promise.

This is EVEN MORE ANNOYING when the thing they tell you *doesn't* upset you at all, and they've assumed it will, and they react to you as if you are upset, when you're not!!! arrghhh!!!

I have a huge problem with the word "but"

To me it negates everything that you said prior.

"I really would like to be with you...but..."
"I think you are a great person...but..."
"we meant to be on time...but..."

It's the way people try to soften shit.
I hate it and try never to use it. (now you will call me on it whenever I do

FUCK OFF!!! I also say "Can I just say?" although that is my issue with never being listened to/taken seriously.

I really do have the worlds worst vocabulary.

'i'm sorry, i just have to say this'

no you don't, you WANT to say it. you don't HAVE to say it. If you HAD to say it, you wouls have SAID it. And if you were SORRY about it, you wouldn't SAY it....

When people abruptly attempt to finish an argument with the phrase "whatever". This is not a valid argumentative response. It provides no sodding justification for the fact that they're being stupid, and it shows just how small minded and ignorant they really are. I'm not held responsible for the damage inflicted upon anything in a five mile radius after someone tries that on me.

From: [identity profile] redshira.livejournal.com
Oh god, yes. When people "whatever" at me, my fury is hot like the sun is hot.
I also hate people who say really unpleasant stuff and tell you "I'm only saying this because I care" or some other variant. NO, bitch, if you CARED, you'd SHUT UP, or find a less cacky way to say whatever it is you clearly just took great pleasure in saying to me.

'Hello, I'm Jim Davidson' usually does it for me. :)

Anything along the 'I don't mean to be [insert character flaw here], but...' lines gets on my goat, although not as much as 'Well, AS someone who knows far about the subject than you, I'm going to refuse to admit you even have a right to an opinion'.

"To be honest..."

Why are you singling out this specific occasion to be honest? Presumably because you're an untrustworthy lying git/manager the rest of the time.

I say no disrespect or equivalent all the time. It means what you've just said is just that. Like, I mean what I say as a statement of fact, rather than saying it as a vehicle for a personal insult. For instance no disrespect, but that's a terrible idea doesn't imply that my intent was to call the person an idiot, but that whatever they said was a terrible idea, that doesn't make them a bad person.

It's like some people get really upset if you call them ignorant - all it means is they lack information, not that they're stupid or prejudiced or whatever. Some people just love to take offence at every little thing, tho'.

Unless said in a comedy Northern accent :-)

You can get away with anything with a comedy northern accent. Irish works quite well too.

Other annoying openers

  • With all due respect... meaning there's no respect at all.
  • That's just not how we do things here meaning the reason why everything is screwed up is because you intentionally screw it up.
  • Let's not focus on details... because then it would be obvious how many people in the room are idiots.
  • I like to think that everyone's opinion counts which makes it clear why dumb things are openly uncovered as dumb and yet you do them anyway.
  • This isn't a democracy meaning that you have no control over the project or events so you called a meeting to discuss people's issues and now you are just going to invalidate them all en masse.

I think if I keep going this could be a very long reply...

"I understand what you're saying, but..."

I BET you don't understand what I'm saying - mostly because you haven't been listening, you have been nodding and smiling smugly whilst thinking over what you're going to say!

People who begin the sentance with, 'Well, basically.....'.

Usually guarantees that the following will in fact be unmitigated drivel, not whittled down to the basics AT ALL!!!!!

Classic irritating things that can be said to piss ME off are:

'Look, it'll do'
'Just be satisfied with it will you?'
'Be quiet'

But then these tend to say more about me as a person than anythign else.

Oh, and whilst I'm here,: come to b-movie come to b-movie come to b-movie come to b-movie come to b-movie come to b-movie (you get the idea).

adding the word 'Look' to the begininng of almost any statement makes it instantly rageworthy.
