but it's Emmie and not Emmy.

It's one of those awkward things, isn't it? You don't want to embarass someone or make them feel bad by correcting them, but after you've let it slide for a while then you feel like it's too late to say anything. And then when you do say something, you feel silly, because it's really not that important.

Throughout most of my life I've spent many weeks in various places called, by various people, Emily, Emma, Amy, Abby and Ellie; and been too embarassed to say anything.

Have any of you experienced this? If i've been saying/spelling your name wrong for the last few years, please tell me now!

In my mind.

On a more serious note, I get a right peeve when people spell it Houghton, not Horton, especially when I've just said it out loud.

If you don't correct people within the first 3 mispronunciations/misspellings, you are doomed forever to them calling you by someone else's name.

I am 'leesa', not 'lissa'. See [livejournal.com profile] cutietrol for details on how to mispronounce for 9+ years.

I remember you telling me it was leesa and not lissa - you were in fact one of the first people i thought of when i made the post!

It's just that i've noticed the 'Emmys' creeeping in, from people who've known me for years, and i thought maybe it was tme to mention it...

I assume it's people who've been using 'Emmie' and seen other people using 'Emmy' and gone 'crap, i've got it wrong'!

Having said that, I dont actually care!

Ive written emails to people with 'Emmie' at the bottom, and it's still come back 'Emmy'!

Lets not even get into the imaginative ways people manage to spell 'Emmeline'.

I call Miz Soap Lys-a rather than Lee-sa because of the way I read the spelling in my head before I met her.

She did correct me but doesn't seem to mind too much when I drunkenly lapse. Or perhaps she does.

A nickname of mine is "Chaff" which gets spelled and pronounced all sorts of ways.

we had a hair client who insisted on calling Alice 'Alison' even though Alice signed ALL of her emails and texts to her 'Alice', and whenever we did her hair everyone called her 'Alice'. it actually became a bit of a joke after a while :)

It doens't really bother me that much, hence why i' ve not mentioned it before. But i'm bored :)

With my full name Marianne, it's Mary-Ann, Marian, Miriam, Marriane all sorts very few ever ever get it right.

Mazz, which should be easier to get right but it has been mis-construed into Mads, Mars, Maz. It's 2 z's dammit..2..I'm greedy and it's my name! ;)

There aren't really very many ways you can fuck up 'Mark'1 - I get the odd person asking if that's with a K or C (cos that really affects the pronunciation, of course), and occasionally someone will call me Matt or Martin, but nothing that bothers me all that much.

1. And I've tried most of the ways of fucking Mark up I can think of, over the years. ;)

I get called Charlotte a lot but that's usually by people who have been corrected before and have just slipped up.

This reminds me of a friend I had while doing my A-levels. Our biology tutor always called Niamh "Ni-am". Niamh, being quite shy didn't immediately correct her and after that of course it was too late. There was a horrible moment about 6 months later where the poor tutor overheard another classmate addressing Niamh properly: she was mortified!

I'm glad you said that because I didn't know if you were an Emmie or an Emmy. I am a Suzi but I don't mind being called Suzy or Susan, however I absolutely hate Susie or Sue. Sue is the worst because I have never once in my life referred to myself as Sue and I make a point of not answering to it unless it's a life and death situation and yet people still don't get it right. After a while it goes beyond people just being forgetful and I start to find it downright rude and presumptious.
