emmelinemay: (Adventures Are Great)

Ok, so my birthday is a long way away, but i'd thought i'd put this out there to see if there was any interest.

[livejournal.com profile] dangermonkey has brought this to my attention.

The Dunwich Dynamo is a 200km night ride from London to the lost city of Dunwich on the Suffolk Coast.

The 2007 one is on the weekend of my 29th Birthday, 28th-29th July. The route is candle-lit :)

Would ANYONE out there be interested in doing this with me for my birthday? You'd have til July to plan/worry/buy a bike/fix your old bike etc.

None of the answers actually works for me.

For me? It's a no. Although in decent shape, I don't particularly enjoy cycling...and it seems a bit more than I would be interested in doing. A little ride around Hyde Park for about 45 minutes?, yes..but anything more, even candlelit is not for me.

But I think YOU should do it as you will have a wicked time and it's YOUR birthday and you should do WHATEVER you want.

I would love to - but it would be much more fun with a few friends in tow than on my own. Although if i can't talk anyone into it, i may well do it anyway!

Quite possibly... Though I cant find a bit saying roughly how long it would take, but 200km does sound far!
They do say you dont need to be ninja, so why not!

it is a terribly long way.

But something about arriving on the beach, on the morning of my birthday, and having a breakfast in the cafe, really appeals!

they do say several times that you don't have to be super fit. This is a Good Thing.

I'd love to do this but it being overnight rules me out - the CFS means regular schedules without exception. But I hope you do it and have lots of fun!

I'm very interested but that's a LONG route. I've cycled a little bit of that route before on the way to Norfolk when I was much fitter and it was a struggle. The Essex/Epping/North Weald part is very hilly but after that I think we hit Norfolk and it's all one big flood plain.

I'd be interested in it but I'm not fit enough atm, we'd have to do some serious training leading up to it.

i have an idea! I should cycle out to yours, and you to mine, that's a good start!

LOL! You've got to be joking! Cycling across the entire length of London really doesn't sound like my idea of fun. Not to mention that's a mostly solitary exercise.

However there are like trail rides and stuff which are good fun. Alternatively we can just meet up somewhere and go for a ride or something.

Or is that too off-road?

I think it's a great idea and if it appeals then you should definitely do it. Afraid I won't be joining you, I'd die after 10minutes and with no straggler safety wagon coming to get me, I'd end up sleeping in a ditch for the rest of my days!

I answered NFW, but also you aretoally crazy..., but also you can do it, with lots of telepathic cheering from me, it;s just that ther is NFW I am getting on a bike to actually join you!

Lord! Someone died last year! What kind of twisted death race are you trying to organize here, woman?

Date: 2007-01-31 12:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] emmelinemay.livejournal.com
hey, they've been running it for like, 14 years, and that's the only death, out of like 700 people! And it was the driver's fault anyway. grrr to drivers.

we passed two people attempting the ride on UniCycles

now THAT'S crazy.

I wonder if i have time to learn to unicycle by july...

well, people have tried it on unicycles, recumbents, and old-skool 3 speeds; so i don't see why not!

I'll stick with my bike-with-gears though, if you don't mind!

I'm certainly not that impressive on my unicycle and BMXing it sounds a chore.
Diarised for later contemplation but I suspect that as an excuse to cycle I'll be there.

Thanks for the heads up.

I rode this two years ago. I would have loved to have done it with someone I knew but in the end none of my friends were up for it. It is a tough ride, but getting to the end is a buzz like no other. The caff is really good too.

I've jumped on a bike in Leicester and cycled to Manchester and back before now. But that was when I was 17, and now I'm pushing 30 and shockingly unfit. This could be something good to aim for tho, if I gets me a racer running and start riding to work in the spring, I could probably be fit enough by summer...

that's my plan too!

It gives me a goal! It got me into the gym tonight, anyway!
