Has anyone else heard/seen Ireland's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest?

I saw the video on you tube and thought Ireland had gone mad, then I read the lyrics, and have now decided that it is actually complete and utter genius.

Oh I come, from a nation
What knows how to write a song
Oh Europe, where or where did it all go wrong?

COME ON!!!!!!

Irelande douze points

Drag acts and bad acts and Terry Wogan`s wig
Mad acts and sad acts, it was Johnny Logan`s gig

Shake your feathers and pop your beak
Shake em to the west and to the east
Wave euro hands and euro feet
Wiggle to the edge of the turkey beat

Irelande douze points
Irelande douze points
Irelande douze points
Do the funky beat

G O B gobble B L E Yeah

Hello Abba, hello Bono, hello Helsinki
Ola Prague, hello sailor, c'est la vie
Alvida sein Mama Mia, and god save the Queen
Bon joir Serbia, good day Austria
You know what I mean?

Shake your feathers and pop your beak
Shake em to the west and to the east
Wave euro hands and euro feet
Wiggle to the edge of the turkey beat

Shake your feathers and pop your beak
Shake em to the west and to the east
Wave euro hands and euro feet
Wiggle to the edge of the turkey beat

Irelande douze points
Irelande douze points
Irelande douze points
Do the funky beat
COME ON!!

Give us another chance, we`re sorry for riverdance
Sure Flately he`s a yank
And the Danube flows through France
Block voting, shock voting
Give your 12 today
You`re all invited to Dublin Ireland
And we`ll party the Shamrock way

Irelande douze points
Irelande douze points
Do the funky beat
COME ON!!

Irelande douze points
Irelande douze points

Shake your feathers

Listen Bulgaria we love you
Belarus, Georgia, Montenegro,
Moldavia, Albania, Croatia,
Poland, Russia, Ukraine,
Macedonia, Love you Turkey
Hungary, Estonia, Slovakia,
Armenia, Bosnia Herzegovina
And don`t forget the Swiss!

The way it usually works is that each country votes for its own winner in a regional show - I'm sure we used to watch the UK one together? Then everyone in the country votes for their favourite, and that one goes on to be that country's eurovision song.

So this one was voted to be Ireland's entry by the people of Ireland!!

We definitely always watched the main one together - when Grannie was alive I always watched with her too and we had a complicated system of betting and voting. That was before the Eastern Europeans joined in and all started to vote for one another, thus preventing such repeats of the great classic victories, like Congratulations, and Making your Mind up, and other such high points of 20th century culture.

I'm sure I remember watching at least one of the nationals with you, we could vote on the winner, I can't remember who it was but we voted for something really silly, but this bird got in who looked a bit like helena bonam carter. It was manymanymany years ago now!!! Terry Wogan used to have the national entrants on his show (going back a LONG way now!!)

It's even worse now - there are so many former Russian territories they all vote for each other!!

Austria has refused to take part this year as they said the voting is all political and nothing to do with the music. Well, DUH.

also, I think if we're talking about high points of 21st century culture in relation to the Eurovision song contest, then this and this are shining examples.

I LOVED that Finnish one - I remember reading your comments on-line and was desperate to hear it; you sent me the Youtube and me and Dave air guitared and wept ourselves silly with giggles, - over reaction, maybe, but you just don't get that sort of stuff over here, we're all taking too busy taking ourselves seriously....

Lordi! They're famous in Finland!!!

Finland has a LOT of goths though - have you seen 'Nemi'? it's a Finnish cartoon strip about a goth! You can get an English translation version added to your LJ friends list:

2006 was a great year for Eurovision - Lithuania would probably have taken it if not for Lordi!!

I take back what I said about irony. How things have changed. Grannie will be turning in her grave!

top tip for this year's contest - Spain with ' Baila el ChikiChiki' by Rodolfo Chikilicuatre. Or perhaps Iceland with 'The wiggle wiggle song' sung by a somewhat camp and gothy attempt at Justin Timberlake.

No, Nemi is Norwegian.

(I used to know Lise, who draws it.)
