Most film critics are the equivalent of the boy who, caught smoking, was made to smoke the whole packet one after the other. And then again the next day, and the next, for the next 5 or 10 years. They hate films. Like, most bakers are either completely ignorant of the smell of freshly baked bread or else are quite sick of it after a few years.
I'm not talking about film critics, I mean all the Americans who've reviewed it on livejournal. Not one person has said it was as good as, or better than the first one, and the majority of them thought it was a bad film.
Fair enough - although quite often US and British tastes diverge when it comes to SciFi. Witness "FarScape" which did fantastically well here, and pretty well in the US, or "Firefly", which was cancelled in the US before the first ep even aired here.
Strikes me we need to get some serious dosh to lure the makers of these series over to Blighty & get 'em making more episodes. These days, CGI effects are reasonably easy to produce, as long as they're not totally state-of-the-art. Then we could sell some decent Sci-Fi back to the US... :-)
i make my own mind up about films. Like - i really like alien 3, and alien ressurection, (apart form the last 15 minutes) but many didn't. (ok, i will admit i occasionally get a bit narky when people disagree with me - it's only because i'm passionate about what i love!)
This film had lots of detail, plot, a great story, it was intricate, interesting, well executed, with some of the most amazingly chorographed fight scenes, some nicely placed humour.
and my favourite thing about the matrix films is how unique and inventive they are - they are never derivative, but often emulated.
My advice? don't listen to me, and don't listen to the bad reviews, see it in the cinema where it's big and bold (and it needs to be big for the wow factor IMO) and make your own mind up!
I make my own mind up about movies too, I don't really care what the critics in the papers and on TV say. One of my all time favourite films is HUDSON HAWK which is a brilliant movie but the critics slagged it off at the time and it was flop in the cinemas. Event Horizon is another one I love, but didn't do very well in the cinemas. I totally agree to see it for yourself and make your own mind up... :)
i have no idea what any of the reviews said, but from what everyone else has been saying i'm heartily glad i didn't read any before i went to see it, it's really really fantastic. visually wow, and i have no idea what everyone's been saying about the plot but its defaintely there, just on a slightly different level to the first film, and on a wildly different level to all the piss poor imitations that have been brought out since the first one.
Indeed. I saw it before I heard or read anything, which is exactly the way that I wanted it.
You are also correct on it being on a different level than the first one, which I fully endorse. Had the plotline been exactly the same, then it would have been a bad film as it would just be repeating what had already gone before.
