get some gummi parcel tape and take a molding of the front of your body (if you wanna do this I can give you more details how to)
make sure its VERY sturdy and take a plastercast from the inside with plaster bandage
peel of the gummi tape
using clay or platercine or something, recreate the chestplate
do the gummi strip thing again
do the paster bandage bit again
then you have a form to take the plate from
all you need then is a sheet of plastic only needs to be about 1 - 2 mm thick (plasticard or similar) and a heat gun/hot hairdryer to soften the plastic over the plaster form (you might need gloves or a cloth to do it)
then its just a matter of trimming the shape...sanding the edges to make em smooth and using something like velco to attach it to you....if you lightly sand the surfac you can pritty much paint it with anything, car body paint could work well and you'd easily find that dull metal colour

Date: 2002-11-22 08:55 am (UTC)Well that picture looks like terrible armour (in a getting-poked-with-sharp-things way), but good to wear. The cuirass in two side pieces would give good articulation. You could have the centre plate, or omit it, depending on how you feel - no-one would notice.
Don't have a backplate. You need something wide and elasticky here, to give you all the stretch you normally have in clothing but you won't have in the plates.
Making it wearable for more than an hour is hard. You can either pad it underneath, which makes it even more unwieldy, or you can be very careful about the weight of the stuff, its articulation and how it's supported.
Things to make it out of are:
Steel - you'll hate wearing this, but we can do it in nicer colours than boring shiny silver (look at Andrea's lizards (http://codesmiths.com/shed/furniture/andrea_bed.htm)).
Stainless steel - forget it - it's a nightmare to shape
Aluminium - Easier to make, lighter to wear
Copper - That would look weird !
Fibreglass - Dead easy, not too hard to make it look nicely metallic either.
Polypropylene - Popular with the re-enactors, because it's lightweight and resistant to being hit with sticks.
Anthony Bryant has a nice site on making repro Japanese armour from plastic sheet (http://www.sengokudaimyo.com/katchu/0.Katchu.html). Might give you some ideas on what's involved. Japanese armour is a real slog - hundreds of tiny bits, but something like a Hotoke Dô (http://www.sengokudaimyo.com/katchu/06.do.html) is closer to what we're talking about than the lamellar stuff.

Unless there's some subtle manga reference going on, I guess you don't need to wear exactly this armour - more like a Whitby version, which is OK to wear for an evening, OK to dance and drink in, doesn't need the otaku-summoning Button of Power on the left kneecap, like it had in the comic. Do you need leg pieces at all ? Big wrist cuffs ? A helmet (although sprayed motorbike helmets are OK for Daft Punk, they're a bit obvious) ? Does it need to be angle grinder proof (are you actually going to grind yourself on stage) ?
The Legends people seem like a decent source for some stuff (how do you feel about the pricing ?) They're probably the people with most experience of building helmets.
Maybe you should do some design work ? Have a think about how complex it all is, and what it costs to buy bits in. How much do you want / can you afford ? What will your your armour look like ? (because to be honest, two bean tins and a bit of tinfoil will still turn heads).
My inclination would be to make beaten metal plate body armour out of aluminium (for lightness), and sew it to a one-piece undergarment. Apply fishnets to garnish. Similar tech for calves and for gauntlets, sewn to fingerless cycling gloves (you need your drinking hands free). You may already have boots of such clumpiness that you don't need any leg armour. I wouldn't armour the thighs, as I think you want the freedom to move - just add a metal peplum if you want. Welding is a little trickier on aluminium, but we could always use it as an excuse to buy a TIG 8-)
One way to do this might be to start with a plaster body mould. A very easy step beyond that would be a fibreglass cast, with metal foil as a finish. Wouldn't sound right when tapped though.

RAR! and the helmet is the least important part - i have one alreay (resin) i can modify to wear, or use it as a starting point to make my own (that doesn't have to be metal). i have already though about the possibiltiy of laser pointers - that's how sad and obsessed i am ;)
i'm not sure how much i was expecting to pay. lots probably.
yup - i have boots! the arm things would be nice, but complex, as if i was going to do that properly, i'd want the full flipup flash LED job. if not, i have things that look the part.
thigh wise - my thighs are evil and the world need to be protected from them. what is a "metal peplum" ? bear in mind, i have never done live roleplay, and never wanted proper armour before - i can make the mask only because i did a performing arts degree and had to make some for that!
design wise, i shall need help. because i could not draw to save my life.

Thighs are hard to armour. They curve around too much and aren't one shape when they move. It's really hard to make plate thigh armour you can sit down in.
Think eighties ra-ra skirt (ask yer granny). Sticky-out flange over your hips. You could dangle some chain mail from it.
Bloody big sewing machine. Either that, or the several litres of purple rivets I have in the shed.
